Statistic about earthquakes

Geeignete Baukonstruktionen in Erdbebenregionen reduzieren Operzahlen erheblich. Der Vergleich zw. der Erdbebenstärke und der Anzahl der Todesopfer zeigt dies deutlich, da in Japan im Vergleich zu Haiti ein Vielfaches an Opfern zu beklagen war.

Soil liquefaction

Besteht der Untergrund aus Sediment, also Ton-, Lehm-, Sand- oder auch Kies kann es passieren, dass durch den Druck der Erdbebenwellen sich die Sandkörner verdichten wollen. Das in Poren und Zwischenräumen eingeschlossene Wasser verhindert dies aber. Dadurch steigt der Druck im Wasser und drängt die Körner auseinander. Die Festigkeit des Sediments wird dadurch reduziert und der Untergrund verflüssigt sich bzw. wird matschig.
